How to Edit or Cancel FBR Invoice — 72-Hour Correction Window Rules

Published: November 3, 2026 | Updated: 5 November 2026 | Reading time: 8 minutes | Published by the FinSmart Team

You submitted an invoice to FBR, but made a mistake. Can you fix it? Yes — within limits, and only if you act quickly. FBR's Digital Invoicing user manual sets a 72-hour rule for edits and cancellations on IRIS. This guide explains the rules, what FinSmart does on its side, and what penalties apply to non-compliant invoicing.

The 72-Hour Rule (FBR Digital Invoicing user manual):

A submitted invoice can be edited or cancelled on IRIS within 72 hours of submission or by month end, whichever comes first. Item details can be edited once; header details and the FBR invoice number stay fixed; cumulative edits are capped at 10% of the previous month's sales. After that, corrections need Commissioner approval.

What Can You Edit? (Within the Window, on IRIS)

Invoice Section Can Edit? Rules
FBR Invoice Number ✗ NO Assigned by FBR at submission. Never changes, even after an edit.
Invoice Date ✗ NO Header detail. Fixed at submission.
Buyer Name / NTN / Registration Type ✗ NO Header details. Fixed at submission. If the buyer is wrong, cancel the invoice and issue a new one.
Item Details ✓ YES Quantity, rate, value, HS code and tax fields can be edited — once per invoice.
Quantity (Qty) ✓ YES Can adjust up or down (one edit only).
Unit Price / Rate ✓ YES Can change the per-unit price (one edit only).
Tax Fields ✓ YES Sales tax, further tax, withholding, extra tax, FED, SRO schedule and item serial can be corrected (one edit only).

The "One Edit" Rule

Important: Item details can be edited ONCE, not multiple times.

Example:

Solution: Check every line carefully before saving the edit. If several things are wrong, cancel the invoice and issue a new one.

The 10% Sales Cap Restriction

Critical limitation: Cumulative edits across ALL invoices in a month cannot exceed 10% of your previous month's total sales.

Example Calculation
Last month: total sales = 1,000,000 10% cap = 100,000
This month: you want to edit 5 invoices, total edited value = 150,000 Exceeds the 10% cap (150,000 > 100,000)
Result Edits beyond the cap are not allowed on IRIS. Further corrections need Commissioner approval.

Impact: Once you hit the 10% limit, you cannot edit any more invoices on IRIS for that month.

Where Edits Happen: IRIS, Not FinSmart

Once an invoice has been accepted by FBR, it is a legal tax record. In production mode FinSmart does not allow a submitted invoice to be edited or deleted. Edits and cancellations are made on the IRIS portal, under FBR's rules above. FinSmart keeps the FBR invoice number, the submission status and the full FBR request/response log on the invoice.

What FinSmart Does on Its Side

How to Edit an Invoice on IRIS

Step-by-Step (within 72 hours and before month end)

  1. Log in to IRIS (https://iris.fbr.gov.pk)
  2. Open Digital Invoicing and find the invoice by its FBR invoice number (shown on the invoice in FinSmart)
  3. Choose the edit option (wording may vary on IRIS)
  4. Correct the item details — quantity, rate, value, HS code, tax fields — in one pass
  5. Save. The FBR invoice number stays the same; the header stays as submitted
  6. Record the correction in your own records so the FinSmart invoice and IRIS agree

After the Window: What You Cannot Edit

Once 72 hours have passed, or the month has ended, IRIS no longer allows the edit. Corrections then need Commissioner approval.

How to Cancel an Invoice

Within 72 Hours (and before month end)

  1. Log in to IRIS and open Digital Invoicing
  2. Find the invoice by its FBR invoice number
  3. Choose the cancel option and give the reason
  4. The invoice is marked as cancelled in FBR's records
  5. Issue a fresh invoice from FinSmart with the correct details; it receives its own FBR invoice number

After 72 Hours or After Month End

Cancellation on IRIS is no longer available. Corrections need Commissioner approval. For a later adjustment to an accepted invoice, the Digital Invoicing API supports a debit note that references the original FBR invoice number (within 180 days of the original invoice); credit notes are handled on IRIS. FinSmart does not issue debit or credit notes today.

Correction Restrictions

Month-End Cut-Off

The window is 72 hours or month end, whichever comes first. An invoice submitted on the last day of the month may have less than 72 hours. Plan corrections around your sales tax return period.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Learn from common FBR mistakes and how to fix them to improve your invoice accuracy.

Mistake Why It's Bad How to Avoid
Trying to edit after 72 hours or after month end IRIS no longer allows the edit. Commissioner approval needed. Check accepted invoices the same day. Edit or cancel immediately.
Editing item details twice Second edit is not allowed. You must cancel the invoice. Get every line right before saving the first edit.
Exceeding the 10% cap Further edits not allowed this month. Track cumulative edited value. Fix data at validation instead.
Trying to change the buyer or the FBR invoice number Header details and the FBR invoice number are fixed. Check the buyer's registration type and NTN/CNIC BEFORE submission.
Cancelling without reason FBR may flag as suspicious. Audit risk. Always document cancellation reason (data error, duplicate, etc.).

Quick Reference: 72-Hour Timeline

Time Since Submission What You Can Do
Within 72 hours and before month end ✓ Edit item details once, or cancel the invoice, on IRIS (within the 10% cap)
Month end reached before 72 hours ✗ Window closed early — the month-end cut-off applies
After 72 hours ✗ No edit or cancellation on IRIS; corrections need Commissioner approval
